Technical Session B: Modernizing the Talmadge Memorial Bridge

This technical session explores the rehabilitation of the Talmadge Memorial Bridge through complete stay cable replacement and deck reprofiling to support the continued growth of the Port of Savannah. Originally opened in 1991, the bridge must now accommodate modern vessel clearance requirements while meeting updated design and wind criteria. The session reviews the project goals, current bridge assessment, development of the replacement cable system, and the engineering challenges associated with raising the bridge profile without compromising the existing structure. Topics include staged cable stressing, temporary and permanent support details, deck and edge girder stress effects, and geometric control during construction. The session offers a case study in extending the usefulness of an existing signature bridge through innovative rehabilitation techniques.
